TOEFL
Test of English as a foreign language (CBT Computer based
test)
The TOEFL measures
the level of English language proficiency of non-native speakers
of English. It is written and published by the Educational Testing
Service (ETS) of Princeton, New Jersey, USA, for students planning
to study in the United States, Canada, or other countries where
English is used in an academic environment.
The TOEFL is
an admission requirement at most of colleges and universities in
the USA. Many scholarships and professional certification programs
require their applicants to take this examination.
The test currently
contains 140 questions and has four sections: Listening Comprehension,
Structure and written expression, Reading Comprehension, and the
test of written English. The first three sections contain multiple
choice questions. The fourth section of the test, the Test of Written
English, contains one essay question.

TWE
Test of written English
The TWE
test gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your skill at performing
academic writing tasks similar to those required of students in
North American universities. This includes the ability to generate
and organize ideas on paper, to support those ideas with examples
or evidence, and to compose a response in standard written English
to an essay question. Topics are designed to be fair and appropriate
for international students and require no specialized knowledge
of any given subject matter.

TSE
Test of spoken English
The Test
of Spoken English measures the ability of non-native speakers of
English to communicate orally in English. Your performance on the
Test of Spoken English indicates how your oral language ability
might affect your ability to communicate successfully in an academic
or professional environment. Many North American institutions of
higher education to select international teaching assistants use
TSE scores. The test requires you to demonstrate your ability to
communicate in English by responding orally to questions that may
not appear to be directly related to your academic or professional
field.
|
Important:
While
the TSE and TWE tests are given at some TOEFL test locations,
they are NOT administered as part of the TOEFL test. They
are administered separately.

CAT
Computer adaptive test
A computer-based
GRE test is tailored to your performance level and provides precise
information about your abilities. At the start of the test, you
are presented with a test question of average difficulty. If you
answer this right, the next question will be more difficult. But
if you answer this wrong, you get an easier question and so on.
It is very important to understand that the questions right at the
beginning affect your score more than those towards the end. These
are the questions that are used to measure your general ability
and you are accordingly presented with a question set. Once you
have progressed into a test, it is very tough to raise your level
and get a better score.
